Ernest Gallo was a vintner and co-founder of the E. & J. Gallo Winery along with his brother Julio. Born in Jackson, California, in 1909 to a wine-making family, he graduated from Modesto High School and attended two years of junior college while working on the family farm. After several years selling grapes in Chicago, he and his brother founded their winery in 1933, eventually expanding to the Cribari Winery in 1954 and opening a research facility in 1958. In 1964, Gallo earned the Merit Award of the American Society of Enologists for his long career as chairman of the board at Gallo Winery, as well as his involvement with the Wine Advisory Board and Wine Institute. In this interview, Gallo discusses the growth of E. & J. Gallo Winery, the California wine industry post-Prohibition, new wine making techniques, and the future of the industry.
