Description

Barry Nelson was an environmentalist, the executive director of Save San Francisco Bay Area Association and the coordinator of Share the Water, a coalition of environmental, fishing and waterfowl interests. Nelson helped win a major battle to reform the Central Valley Project and lobbied for legislation to reflect Share the Water’s vision of the Central Valley. The bills he attempted to get passed in Congress include the Miller-Bradley and Seymour bills; he also participated in the Endangered Species Act, Somach-Graff negotiations, Share the Water and fish and game protection legislation. The interview includes detailed discussion of bills and lobbying during the early 90s, the difficulties surrounding passing bills and the development of CVPIA (Central Valley Project Improvement Act), and recollections of individuals such as Bill Bradley, George Miller, J. Bennett Johnston, John Seymour, and Pete Wilson. This interview is part of a group of interviews documenting the history of California water resources development.
