Description
Marjorie Bridge Farquhar was a pioneer Sierra climber, conservationist, photographer and Sierra Club leader. Farquhar was born in San Francisco and attended Berkeley High School as well as the University of California Berkeley. She was very active and was constantly on various world trips, which ranged from Asia in 1921, a YWCA international conference in Yugoslavia in 1925, Africa, Australia and Antarctica. Along with her adventuring, Farquhar was an active climber of the Sierra and climbed various locations such as Higher Cathedral Spire in Yosemite, Muir Gorge and the East Face of Mt. Whitney. She also established a photography business in 1925 and later formed Bridge & Gunn in the 1930s. Her marriage to Francis Farquhar in 1934 only increased her activity in the Sierra Club, American Alpine Club and conservation movements. In this interview Farquhar discusses her family background, growing up in Mill Valley and San Francisco, international trips, photography, Sierra Club Lodge and skiing, marriage, children, Girl Scouts, tour around the world in 1951, and Madeline "Putty" Koser. Interview's CD-ROM includes the transcript and a collection of sound, movie, graphic and text files in cross-platform Adobe Acrobat. Also includes bibliographies and chapters on how to do an oral history interview and how to make a family history CD. This interview was donated to the Oral History Center.
