Description
Charles Carpy was a Napa Valley vintner and a managing partner of Freemark Abbey Winery. A Napa Valley native, he was born in 1927 in St. Helena and earned his bachelor’s degree in agricultural economics from the University of California, Davis, and his master's degree from Montana State University. Already the owner of a vineyard, Carpy formed a partnership to co-own and operate the Freemark Abbey Winery in 1966, producing his first wines a year later, and went on to acquire the Rutherford Hill Winery in 1976. He was also an active member of the Napa Valley community, serving as the president of the Napa Valley Vintners Association and the chairman of the California Wine Commission. In this interview, Carpy describes his family history in the Napa Valley, his education and early experiences in winemaking, and his own long career as a vintner. This interview is part of a group of interviews documenting the California wine industry.
