Description

Constance Crowley Bowles was the owner of the Bowles Porcelain Collection. Born in 1919 in San Francisco, she spent her childhood on the East and West Marin Islands in the Bay and attended Sarah Lawrence College. An oral history with Bowles was proposed as a way to record the history of the Bowles Porcelain Collection, a treasury of 18th-century English porcelain that is the central endowment of the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco’s Palace of the Legion of Honor’s Bowles Gallery. In this interview, she discusses the Crowley and Bowles family history, pieces in her family’s collection, antique porcelain dealers, other collectors, and personal reasons for collecting. This interview is part of a group of interviews documenting museums and art institutions in the Bay Area.
