DuPont Guerry III was an ophthalmologist known for his successful private practice and his position as chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at Virginia Medical College. Guerry was raised in Greenville, South Carolina. He attended Furman University and the University of Virginia Medical School. Following an internship in New York City, he relocated to Richmond, Virginia, to open his private practice, which was open from 1944–188, and was chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at Virginia Medical College from 1953–1973. He did work on vitamin K research, photocoagulation, retinal detachment surgery, development of the intraocular lens, and choroidal detachment. In this interview, Guerry discusses all this as well as the Presbyterian Hospital, Columbia University residency, 1941-1944; John M. Wheeler, Arnold Knapp, Ramon Castroviejo, Manuel Troncoso, and others; fostering research, resident training, and colleagues, Herbert Wiesinger, William T. Ham, Wolfgang A. Lieb, Walter J. Geeraets at Virginia Medical College; memberships, honors, and his thoughts on issues in the profession. This interview is part of a group of interviews documenting developments in ophthalmology.
