Description
John Wright was chairman of the board of M. & H. Vineyards and the president of Domaine Chandon, the first French-owned sparkling winery in California. Born in 1933 in Buffalo, New York, Wright attended Wesleyan University and earned his bachelor’s degree in chemistry in 1954. Following a job with the American Viscose Company, he worked as a market development specialist and later management consultant for the company Arthur D. Little beginning in the early 1960s. After publishing a three volume study on wine and marketing, he was asked by the French winemaking company Moët Hennessy to orchestrate and lead their Napa Valley venture, Domaine Chandon, which Wright helped to establish in 1973. In this interview, followed by a short interview with enologist Edmond Maudière, Wright discusses his early work experiences and study of the wine industry, establishing a connection with Moët Hennessy, working with Robert Mondavi and the Trefethen family, and the growth of Domaine Chandon. This interview is part of a group of interviews documenting the California wine industry.
