Description

M. M. Snodgrass was an employee of the Richmond-San Rafael Ferry Company from 1924 until the ferry’s last trip on August 31, 1956. Born in 1911 in Blackfoot, Idaho, Snodgrass and his family moved to Richmond, California in 1923. He began working on the ferry at age twelve and was in turn a dishwasher, a cook, a ticket agent, a toll collector, the commissary manager, and the port superintendent. In this interview, Snodgrass discusses his childhood in Idaho and Richmond, working for the Richmond-San Rafael Ferry Company, the impact of World War II on ferry operations, urban development, and the loss of downtown Richmond in the 1950s and 1960s.
