Ira Dale Mays was an ironworker born in Waterloo, Iowa in 1918. He moved to Richmond, California in the 1940s and began working as a greaser in the Kaiser Shipyards, becoming a certified welder within two months. In this interview, Mays discusses his life in Iowa, moving to Richmond during the war, his experience in the Kaiser Shipyards, women and minorities in the workplace, and postwar developments in Richmond.
