George Conrad Heikes was a mining geologist who worked in various mines in Poland, Greece, Korea and India. Heikes was born in Paris France in 1900 but grew up in Salt Lake City, Utah where his family was heavily involved with the mining industry. He originally attempted to be an electro-metallurgist but instead began studying geology at Lehigh University and graduated in 1922. He went on to work for Anaconda Co, in Butte Montana where he remained until 1934. During this time he worked in various mines including ones in Poland in 1925. During World War II he worked for the Reading Coal and Iron Company, was the chief geologist of the National Lead Company (1937-40), Olin Company (1943-44), and the War Production Board (1944-45). Post-war he participated in geological surveys in Greece as part of the Economic Cooperation Administration (ECA) derived from the Marshall Plan. He was also an advisor for the Agency for International Development in Korea from 1960 to 1964. In this interview Heikes discusses his mining family history, Anaconda Company, 1924-1934, Giesche Mines, Poland, 1925-1934, time as chief geologist at the National Lead Company, mining work during WWII, mining in Greece, geological survey, ECA, Marshall Plan, surveying mineral resources of India, and ethics and mining stock sales.
