Description

Selena Foster was one of the many people who migrated to California looking for work during World War II. Born in Cherokee County, Texas in 1916, Foster and her husband moved to Richmond in 1944, where he worked at the Kaiser Shipyards while she got a job running the donut machine at Leo’s Defense Diner. In 1947, she opened the Oakland-based restaurant Selena’s Kitchen. Most of her career was spent working in the restaurant industry. In this interview, Foster discusses family life, growing up in a rural environment, living and working in Richmond, hiring discrimination, and the development of Richmond after the war.
