Robert Shetterly was a former president and CEO of Clorox Co. and a community leader in Oakland, California, particularly known for his work with the East Oakland Youth Development Center. Born in 1915 in Corning, New York, he graduated from the University of Rochester and moved to Oakland in 1965. In his business career, he oversaw the divestment of Clorox Co. from Procter & Gamble in 1969, as well as the company’s subsequent development and diversification over the 1970s. Shetterly was also the first chairman of the Oakland Council of Economic Development and chairman of the board of trustees of East Oakland Youth Development Center, in addition to his work with other community service organizations such as the United Way of the Bay Area and the New Oakland Committee. In this interview, Shetterly discusses the growth of Clorox Co., urban and economic development in Oakland, affirmative action, student activism and other social concerns of the 1960s. This interview is part of a group of interviews documenting the history of Bay Area philanthropy.
