Ralph Berkowitz was the Dean of Tanglewood, a piano soloist, music instructor, and painter. Born in 1910 in Brooklyn, New York, he attended the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia where he later joined the faculty. In 1940, Berkowitz became an accompanist for cellist Gregor Piatigorsky until Piatigorsky’s death in 1973. From 1951 to 1964, he served as the Dean of the Berkshire Music Center at Tanglewood. Berkowitz also worked as a business manager of the Albuquerque Symphony Orchestra. In addition to teaching and performing, Berkowitz was also a painter, and his works are in numerous private collections in New York, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, and Albuquerque. In this interview, Berkowitz discusses his career as Dean and teacher at Tanglewood, his artistic temperament, activities during World War II, and memorable figures of the American music scene.
