Description

Pratt Peterson was a former whaler at the Richmond Whaling Station, the site of the last whaling operation in the US. Born in 1923 in Ephraim, Utah to a Mormon family, Peterson came to California in the early 1940s and began working in the fishing industry. He fished in Alaska, Mexico, and coastal California and participated in the last sardine season in Monterey Bay before starting his work at the Richmond Whaling Station in 1958. He remained there until the station closed in 1972. In this interview, Peterson discusses his Mormon upbringing, his early career in the fishing industry, and his experience working at the Richmond Whaling Station until its closure.
