Leslie Luttgens was a Bay Area community leader who took on many leadership roles in civic and philanthropic organizations, including president of the United Way of the Bay Area, formerly the United Bay Area Crusade, and board member of the Rosenberg Foundation. Born in 1922 in Palo Alto, Luttgens attended Stanford University for her undergraduate years and earned her degree in political science in 1943. She began her career as a civic leader soon after her graduation and marriage, working with the League of Women Voters, the Junior League, and the Volunteer Bureau. In addition to her community service, she has also been involved with many corporate and governmental organizations, serving in the President’s Take Force on Private Sector Initiatives under the Reagan administration. In this interview, Luttgens discusses Bay Area policy concerns, grant programs, volunteering, and the growth of the Stanford Hospital Auxiliary, the Rosenberg Foundation, and countless other organizations.
