Description
Legh Knowles was a salesman and executive at Beaulieu Vineyards who transformed the Napa Valley wine industry by appealing to a mass audience. Born in 1919 in Danbury, Connecticut, he learned to play the trumpet at a young age and went on to play with the Glenn Miller Band for several years. Following his service in World War II, he entered the California wine scene through the Wine Advisory Board, where his work in marketing and promotion landed him a job with Ernest and Julio Gallo. From there, he joined the Napa Valley’s Beaulieu Vineyards as a sales manager in 1962, eventually serving as both chairman and president before his retirement in 1988. In this interview, Knowles discusses his own career in music, sales, and wine, in addition to the history of Beaulieu Vineyards and its change of ownership from the de Latour family to the Heublein corporation. This interview is part of a group of interviews documenting the California wine industry.
