Charles Crawford was the vice president and secretary of E. & J. Gallo Winery, where he worked for over 40 years. Born in 1918 in Antioch, California, he attended the University of California, Berkeley, as an undergraduate and earned his master’s degree from Cornell University. Following the onset of World War II, he joined the workforce with the Gallo Winery in the 1940s and oversaw significant growth within the company, including the development of Gallo brandy. In addition to his work with the Gallo brothers, he has been involved in numerous viticultural organizations, including the Technical Advisory Committee of the Wine Institute and the American Society of Enology and Viticulture. In this interview, Crawford discusses his experiences working with Ernest and Julio Gallo, notable figures in viticulture, and general changes in the wine industry since the 1940s.
