Reverend William J. Monihan was the University of San Francisco's director of library relations who supervised the construction of the Gleeson Library. Born in San Francisco in 1914, he entered the Society of Jesus in 1932. Monihan was ordained in 1945 and received his bachelor's in library science from UC Berkeley in 1952. During his tenure as Gleeson Library's chief librarian from 1947 to 1964, he attracted important collections and bequests to the library from some of the world's greatest book collectors. In this interview, Monihan discusses Jesuit schooling, his appointment as librarian at the University of San Francisco, the Gleeson Library, booksellers across the world, and memorable colleagues.
