Roger Heyns was an educator, university administrator, and foundation organizer who served as the president of the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation of Palo Alto, California, from 1977 to 1987. Born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, in 1918, he attended Calvin College for his undergraduate years and went on to receive his master’s and doctorate degrees in social psychology from the University of Michigan. He oversaw significant development as president of the Hewlett foundation, growing the grant program from $3 million to $30 million per year. In his professional career, Heyns served as vice president of the University of Michigan, chancellor of the University of California, Berkeley, and president of the American Council on Education.
