Richard B. Gump was a composer and president of Gumps San Francisco. Born in 1906 in San Francisco, he started learning the piano and violin from a young age. After his father’s death in 1947, Richard Gump became president of Gump’s until his retirement in 1975. After his time as president, Gump contributed to many charitable causes. In 1985, the Gump Station was established after he donated 33 acres of his property on the shore of Cook’s Bay to UC Berkeley. In this interview, Gump discusses his childhood in San Francisco, his various projects as president of Gump’s thoughts on commerce and labor, and the role of music in his life.
