Herman Gallegos was an independent management consultant who worked with numerous philanthropic boards and organizations in the Bay Area. Born in Aguilar, Colorado, Gallegos earned his bachelor’s degree from California State University at San Jose and his master’s degree in social welfare from the University of California, Berkeley. In his professional career, he was a company director for Pacific Telesis Group and a consultant for Hallmark Cards, in addition to his work with philanthropic organizations such as the Rockefeller Foundation and the Rosenberg Foundation. In his civic work, he has been committed to empowering Mexican Americans in the nonprofit world, serving as Executive Director of the National Council of La Raza, formerly the Southwest Council, and Director Emeritus of Hispanics in Philanthropy. In this interview, Gallegos discusses his educational and professional experiences, political and labor issues in the Mexican American community, Saul Alinksky and Ernesto Galarza, and minority representation in philanthropy. This interview is part of a group of interviews documenting the history of Bay Area philanthropy.
