Madi Bacon was the founder and director of the San Francisco Boys Chorus (SFBC), the first boy’s repertory chorus in the country. Born in 1906 in Chicago, she obtained a bachelors in romance languages and masters in music from the University of Chicago. In 1946, Bacon headed the Music Extension Division at UC Berkeley, where she expanded the program and created a community choir. Additionally she was Professor of Music at the University of Chicago, Dean of Music at Roosevelt University, and Music Supervisor in the Glencoe, Illinois Public Schools. In 1948 Bacon founded the SFBC with 25 boys. She served as the choir's conductor and director until her retirement in 1972. In this interview, she discusses her education at University of Chicago, the UC Extension music program and chorus, performances with the SF Opera and Symphony, and the beginnings of SFBC.
