Description

Sanford Treguboff was a social worker, consultant, and community leader involved in numerous Jewish organizations around the Bay Area, particularly the Jewish Welfare Federation. Born to a Jewish family in Harbin, China, he graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1931 and worked briefly as a caseworker for the Jewish Family Service Agency and the San Francisco Committee for Service to Emigrés. Following his service in World War II, he worked with the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration and the Central Tracing Bureau to assist displaced persons throughout Europe. Upon his return to the United States, he went on to serve as the executive vice-president of the Jewish Welfare Federation and later founded Consultants in Philanthropy after his retirement in 1970. In this interview, Sanford discusses the Jewish communities of Harbin and San Francisco, his political engagement during the war and postwar years, and his myriad experiences as a social worker in the Bay Area. This interview is part of a group of interviews documenting Jewish communities in California.
