Amandus Kasimatis was a horticulturist and viticulturist who worked in the Agricultural Extension Service for over 30 years. Born in 1921 in San Luis Obispo, California, Kasimatis attended UCLA in the 1940s while also serving in the Navy, before earning his master’s degree in horticulture from the University of California, Davis. After working as a farm advisor in Kern County, he became a viticulture specialist through the Agricultural Extension Service, headquartered at Davis in the Department of Viticulture and Enology. He was also involved in the Foundation Plant Material Service and Wine Institute, and following his retirement from the Extension, he continued to work as a consultant on agricultural and viticultural matters. In this interview, Kasimatis discusses his extensive field work and research in viticulture, as well as the changing nature of vineyards over the mid-20th century.
