John B. Bates was a litigator and partner in the San Francisco Law Firm Pillsbury, Madison & Sutro. Born in 1918 in Oakland, California, Bates graduated from Stanford in 1940 with an undergraduate degree in economics and served in the Navy from 1941 to 1943. After earning his JD from Berkeley Law (formerly known as Boalt Hall) in 1947, he began working for Pillsbury, Madison, and Sutro, specializing in litigation and eventually becoming the firm chairman from 1980 to 1983. In this interview, Bates discusses his major cases with clients like Bay Area Rapid Transit District and Pacific Telephone & Telegraph, meeting prominent politicians, and the evolution of law firm management policies and organization.
