Description

Maynard Amerine was a professor at the University of California, Davis, and a pioneer in viticulture and enology following the repeal of Prohibition. Born in 1911 in San Jose, California, he earned his bachelor’s degree and PhD from the University of California, Berkeley, and went on to join the Department of Viticulture at UC Davis as a faculty member and later professor. A prolific writer and researcher, Amerine authored numerous books on wine, including the “University of California/Sotheby Book of California Wine,” which he edited alongside Doris Muscatine and Bob Thompson. Amerine is also known for developing the Winkler scale, a system that divides wine regions based on temperature, with fellow Davis professor Albert Winkler. In this follow-up to a 1971 interview, Amerine discusses his work since the seventies, including his final teaching years at UC Davis, field research and academic publications, and consulting for the Wine Institute and Wine Advisory Board. This interview is part of a group of interviews documenting the California wine industry.
