Description

Eugene Trefethen was a former president of Kaiser Industries and the proprietor of Trefethen Vineyards, which he established alongside his son John. Born in Oakland in 1909, he graduated in 1930 with a degree in political science from the University of California, Berkeley, followed by one year at Harvard School of Business. A close friend of Edgar Kaiser since college, he began working with his father Henry Kaiser in various infrastructure and industrial projects, including the development of Kaiser Aluminum, Kaiser Cement, and later the Kaiser Foundation Health Plan. In 1968, Trefethen purchased a property in Napa Valley and began making wine at the encouragement of his son, eventually growing the business into Trefethen Vineyards and serving as chairman of the board. In this interview, paired with a secondary interview with his wife Catherine, Trefethen discusses his recollections of Henry and Edgar Kaiser, Kaiser’s transition from infrastructure to healthcare, and the development of his winery. Trefethen was selected to be interviewed for making an outstanding contribution to UC Berkeley; this honor was made possible by a generous endowment from the class of 1931.
