John A. Sutro Sr. was a partner in the San Francisco law firm Pillsbury, Madison & Sutro. Born in San Francisco in 1905, Sutro graduated from Stanford in 1926 and earned his J.D. from Harvard Law in 1929. He joined the firm that same year and, after serving as a Naval Intelligence Officer in WWII, became Pacific Telephone and Telegraph’s general attorney in 1947. In 1960, he became senior council at Pillsbury, Madison and Sutro and was elected president of San Francisco Bar Association in 1962. In this interview, Sutro discusses early clients and cases with Pillsbury, Madison & Sutro, San Francisco and California State Bar Associations, merit selections of judges, and his work with the Pacific Telephone and Telegraph company.
