Description
John B. Cella II was a Napa Valley vintner who worked at the family-owned Roma Wine Company and later became the president of Cella Vineyards. Born in 1919 in New York, he earned his bachelor’s degree in commerce from the University of Notre Dame in 1939 and went on to serve in World War II. Though Roma Wine was sold to Schenley Distillers in 1941, Cella returned in 1945 to take on the vice presidency and then presidency of the family’s new venture, Cella Vineyards. In 1969, he became the vice president of United Vintners, the company to which he had sold Cella Vineyards in 1961. He later worked with Guild Wineries for ten years until his retirement in 1991. In this interview, Cella discusses his family history and the growth of Roma Wine, Cella Vineyards during the 1946 market boom, and his experiences with large-scale companies like United Vintners, Heublein, and Guild Wineries. This interview is part of a group of interviews documenting the California wine industry.
