Description
Edna Murphy was the mother of seven children and worked as an instructional aide for the Sequoia Union High School District in California. She was born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri, and she moved to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1943 after her husband, Warren, was drafted into the army during World War II. After Warren returned from the war in 1945, their family eventually settled in Menlo Park, California. Amid the desegregation efforts of the late 1960s, she became involved in the city’s civic affairs as a member of the housing commission. In this donated interview, Murphy discusses her experiences of motherhood, racism, and black culture in Kansas City and the Bay Area.
