Margaret Avery Rowell was a cellist and music instructor at many institutions, including UC Berkeley. Born in 1900 inRedlands, California, she received a B.A. in music and social economics from UC Berkeley in 1923. In 1954, Rowell and cellist Colin Hampton founded the California Cello Club (later renamed the Berkeley Cello Club), which became a forum for visiting cellists. She taught at UC Berkeley, Mills College, Stanford University, and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. In 1970, Margaret Rowell was named String Teacher of the Year by the American String Teachers Association, and in 1982 became the Grand Dame du Violoncelle in a ceremony at Indiana University’s School of Music.
