Description

Rudolf Schaeffer was an art educator and founder of the Rudolph Schaeffer School of Design in San Francisco. Born in 1886 in Clare, Michigan, he attended the Thomas Normal Training School and moved to California in 1910. Five years later, Schaeffer started teaching at the School of California Arts and Crats (now called California College of the Arts) and developed new curriculum to teach color theory. In 1924, he opened his own art school in San Francisco's Chinatown. The school turned out an army of designers, architects, interior decorators, teachers, and colorists before it closed in 1984. In this interview, Schaeffer discusses his childcare in Michigan, friends among Bay Area artists, influence from Oriental art, and the Rudolph Schaeffer School of Design.
