Description

George L. Collins was a National Park Service employee whose work ranged from being a park ranger to administration and conservation. He was born and raised in Tehama County, California before moving to the Bay Area to attend the California School of Arts and Crafts in San Francisco. It was here that he developed an interest in the land after working summers in the mountains. During this time he met Assistant Director Horace M. Albright, co-founder of the U.S. National Park Service and was convinced to join the NPS. In 1929, Collins was assigned as a Park Service ranger to the Grand Canyon where he stayed until 1935. After his time at the Grand Canyon he moved to planning, administration and work with the Civilian Conservation Corps, Lake Mead and Santa Fe from 1935 to 1937. It was during his Depression-Era assignments that he experienced the politics and planning of the Conservation Corps, specifically regarding Lake Mead. From there he became the Deputy Assistant Director for land planning in the National Park Service office in Washington. He focused primarily on recreation and resource planning and after WWII moved to the western regional office where he remained until 1960. He participated in the Central Valley Project, Alaska and Pacific Coast recreation surveys in the 1950s, and campaigned for the Arctic International Wildlife Range and the Point Reyes National Seashore. He was also the vice-president of the Conservation Associates who worked to establish Castle Rock, Nipomo Dunes and several over state parks from 1960 to 1974. In this interview, Collins discusses his introduction to the Park Service, his time as a Grand Canyon ranger, Depression-Era Assignments and the controversies around the Civilian Conservation Corps, his time in the director's office, land-use planning in the New Deal era, the First World Conference on National Parks (1962), nature conservancy, the Sempervirens Fund and conservation diplomacy and state park land acquisition.
