Valenti Angelo was a printmaker, illustrator, and author. Born in 1897 in Tuscany, Italy, he immigrated to the United States in 1905 and settled in Antioch, California. Angelo became a skilled engraver and printer. In 1926, Angelo made his first book of illustrations for the Grabhorn Press. He also wrote children's stories including "Nino," which won the Newbery Honor in 1939. In the span of 34 years, he decorated and illustrated roughly 250 books. In this interview, Angelo discusses his childhood in Italy, commercial art work, book illustrations, the Grabhorns, and the process of writing children's books.
