Ruth Arnstein Hart was a Berkeley community leader known for her involvement in numerous civic organizations and the wife of a former Vice Chancellor of the University of California, Berkeley. She was born in San Francisco, attended university at Goucher College for her undergraduate years, and settled in Berkeley following her marriage to James D. Hart, then a professor of English at the university. A dedicated community leader, Hart sat on the board of directors for the community YWCA, in addition to her involvement with Berkeley Woman for Better Government, the Human Relations and Welfare Commission, and the Berkeley Youth Council. Within the YWCA, she founded the Communications Council as an outlet for Berkeley citizens to discuss their concerns in the midst of the turbulent 1960s. In this interview, Hart discusses her experiences as a faculty wife, her involvement in local politics, the Loyalty Oath and other postwar concerns at the university, and the future of the YWCA.
