Elizabeth Rudel Gatov was the treasurer of the United States from 1961 to 1962 under President John F. Kennedy. Born in Montreal, Canada in 1911, Gatov attended Smith College from 1929 to 1931 and graduated from the University of Michigan with a bachelor’s degree in 1937. She was active in the campaigns of several Democratic candidates and served as the California Democratic national committeewoman from 1956 to 1965. From 1965 through 1977, she was a member of the Planned Parenthood-World Population executive committee. In this interview, Gatov discusses her education, marriages and move to California, community volunteer work, her early career and entry into politics, volunteering in politics, her tenure as the Democratic national committeewoman for California, her position as the US treasurer, working with Planned Parenthood, and her thoughts on women in politics.
