March Fong Eu was a member of the California State Assembly between 1967 and 1974 and the Secretary of State of California from 1974 until 1994. Born to a second-generation Chinese father and a first-generation Chinese mother, Eu grew up in Oakdale and Richmond, California and attended the University of California, Berkeley. She later earned a master’s degree in education from Mills College and a doctorate in education from Stanford University. She got her start in local politics in 1956 as a member of the Alameda County Board of Education. In this interview, Eu discusses her education and early career, the Alameda County Board of Education, her election to the California State Assembly and work as an assemblywoman, staff support, balancing life and work, and her campaign for Secretary of State.
