Sheldon Cheney was a writer, stage producer, and art critic. Born in 1886 in Berkeley, he received a bachelor's degree in architecture from UC Berkeley n 1908. During his studies, Cheney found a love for theater, inspired largely the performances at the Hearst Greek Theater. In 1913, he began studying drama at Harvard University. Three years later, Cheney founded Theater Arts Magazine in Detroit and then moved to New York where, as a producer, he was associated with Actors' Theater and the Independent Theaters' Clearing House. An author of 14 books, his first major work "A Primer of Modern Art" appeared in 1924. In this interview, Cheney discusses his childhood and education in Berkeley, association with Sam Hume and Frank Lloyd Wright, the San Francisco earthquake and fire, and the start of Theater Arts Magazine.
