Mabel Vernon was a prominent leader in the American suffrage movement, as well as an activist for peace. Born in 1883 in Wilmington, Delaware, Vernon graduated Swarthmore College in 1906 and returned to school for a master’s degree at Columbia University in 1923. She was part of the National American Woman Suffrage Association and eventually became the executive secretary for the National Women’s Party. She was also the campaign director for the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom and the director and later chairman of the People’s Mandate Committee. In this interview, Vernon discusses her childhood and education, her suffrage work, campaigning for peace, and her post-suffrage movement activities.
