Eleanor Richards Lyon was an Oakland community leader involved in numerous volunteer organizations and conservation efforts in Northern California. Born in Los Angeles in 1889, Lyon attended Occidental College and worked briefly as a teacher, before settling with her husband Harvey Lyon in Oakland. Lyon was actively engaged within the Oakland community volunteering with and directing organizations such as Traveler’s Aid, the Oakland Hospitality House, the Oakland Symphony, and a local Mother’s Club. Lyon was also a board member of Save-the-Redwoods League and worked with the Daughters of the American Revolution in conservation. And in 1959, she and her husband established the Bruce Lyon Memorial Laboratory at the Children's Hospital, Oakland, in honor of their son. In this interview, Lyon discusses her teaching career, womens’ clubs and volunteer organizations, the Children’s Hospital, conservation, and family life.
