Description

Brother Timothy, born Anthony George Diener, was a vintner and a member of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, a religious teaching order that established a novitiate in Martinez in 1879 and began producing alcohol in 1882 to support its teaching venture. Born in 1910 in New Jersey, Brother Timothy attended a Christian Brothers high school in Oakland and went on to earn a degree in science from St. Mary’s College. Joining the order in 1928, he worked as a teacher in a Christian Brothers high school before taking on the role of wine chemist, eventually becoming the vice president of the order’s wineries. Along with Brothers John and Gregory, Timothy was one of several members who was instrumental to the development of their wine and alcohol business, marketing their table wine out of the Napa Valley and their dessert wine and brandy out of the San Joaquin Valley. In this interview, Brother Timothy discusses the history of Jean-Baptiste de la Salle and the Christian Brothers, the beginnings of a wine business in California, Alfred Fromm’s marketing influence, and the expansion and acquisition of new properties. This interview is part of a group of interviews documenting the California wine industry.
