Description
Lucius Powers was a California lawyer, state assemblyman, and president of the family-established Mt. Tivy Winery in the San Joaquin Valley. Born in 1901 in Fresno, California, Powers grew up on a ranch where his father grew grapes and other produce and went on to earn his law degree from Berkeley Law (formerly known as Boalt Hall) in 1926. In addition to serving as a representative in the California State Assembly from 1931 to 1934, Powers helped his father purchase and establish the Mt. Tivy Winery Corporation in 1933, becoming president shortly after following his father’s passing. Powers also acted as an attorney for the California Vineyardists Association, of which his father was an early member. In this interview, Powers discusses wineries in the Fresno and San Joaquin Valley area, Prohibition years and post-Repeal legislation, problems in the wine industry in the 1930s, and his education and legislative service. This interview is part of a group of interviews documenting the California wine industry.
