Jefferson Peyser was a lawyer for the California Wine Institute and a former California state assemblyman. Born in San Francisco in 1899, he graduated from Berkeley Law, formerly known as Boalt Hall, in 1923. Following four years on the city’s Board of Supervisors, he was elected to the California State Assembly in 1934, though he later quit the legislature to become a lobbyist for the San Francisco Council of Commerce in 1939. In addition, Peyser has acted as the general counsel for the Wine Institute since its incorporation in 1934, a process in which he was heavily involved. In this interview, Peyser discusses the formative years of the Wine Institute, fair trade laws, taxes and trade barriers, and his own extensive career in the wine industry. This interview is part of a group of interviews documenting the California wine industry.
