Helen Valeska Bary was a suffragist and a social welfare worker. She conducted research on the living conditions of children in Puerto Rico for the US Children’s Bureau and worked for the United States Social Security Board from its founding in 1935 until 1948. In this interview, Bary reflects on her childhood, the California suffrage movement, the McNamara Brothers case, and her work with the California Industrial Welfare Commission, the War Labor Policies Board, the US Children’s Bureau, the California State Department of Social Welfare, the National Recovery Administration, and the Social Security Board. She also discusses other social work and her thoughts on Japanese American internment camps during World War II.
