Description

Louis Petri was a Bay Area vintner who headed the Petri Wine Company and Allied Grape Growers in the mid-20th century. Born 1912 in San Francisco, he studied medicine at the University of St. Louis, leaving in 1935 to work at the family wine company established by his father, which would later become United Vintners. While working at the winery, the younger Petri attended enology classes through the University of California and encouraged the company to market and distribute their wines nationally. In 1953, Petri Wine Company acquired Italian Swiss Colony, and in 1968, Petri Wine and the larger United Vintners label were sold to Allied Grape Growers, an organization that Petri was instrumental in creating, and later to Heublein. In this interview, Petri discusses the history of his family and the Petri Wine Company, the creation of Allied Grape Growers, patterns and future trends in wine marketing, and the structure of national corporations and premium wineries.
