Daniel E. Koshland was a former president and executive board chairman at Levi Strauss & Co. and a philanthropist who worked with numerous local and national nonprofit organizations. A Bay Area native, Koshland grew up in San Francisco and attended the University of California, Berkeley, where he graduated in 1913. Through his work with the San Francisco Foundation, the San Francisco Housing Association, the Community Chest, and other organizations, he went on to establish himself as a community leader as well as an active businessman. And in 1968, he established the Koshland Laboratory of Neurochemistry as an adjunct of the Stanford Medical School. In this interview, Koshland discusses his work in business and philanthropy, fundraising strategies, changes in the Jewish community, and the role of ethics in commerce and labor.
