Glenn A. Wessels was a painter, lithographer, and professor emeritus of fine arts at UC Berkeley. Born in 1895 in Capetown, South Africa, he received an A.B. in Psychology of Perception and M.A. in European Art Study from UC Berkeley. He began his art career as an illustrator for the San Francisco Call. Wessels began teaching at the California School of Arts and became an assistant professor of fine arts at UC Berkeley in 1942. He painted five murals for the Federal Art Project and later became technical adviser and supervisor for the project in the Oakland area. In 1963 Wessels retired from teaching and was invited by Governor Pat Brown to become a California State Commissioner of Fine Arts. In this interview, he discusses his education in UC Berkeley and Paris, San Francisco arts and environmental influences, the Federal Arts Project, and his approach teaching.
