Description

Haywood Hunt was a printer and entrepreneur. Born in Durham, North Carolina in 1888, he started working at a print shop at the age of 15. Six years later Hunt met the Grabhorn brothers in Seattle. In 1915, he came to San Francisco and started working at Schwabacher-Frey’s, a major West Coast printer and stationer. In 1921, Hunt served as vice-president of the San Francisco Craftsmen’s Club and president of the Pacific Society. Then he went to work at the Kennedy-ten Bosch Company, which he later purchased. In 1940, Hunt left Kennedy-ten Bosch and started his own business, mainly focusing on typography. Additionally, he started a book club called the Limited Editions Club with his peers. In this interview, Hunt discusses his early days in printing in North Carolina, Edwin and Robert Grabhorn, the Kennedy-ten Bosch Co., and the San Francisco Craftmen’s Club. This interview is part of a group of interviews documenting literature, publishing, and printing in the Bay Area.
