Description
John W. Gregg started the Department of Landscape Architecture at the University of California in 1913 and was chairman of the department until his retirement in 1946. Gregg was born in Weare, New Hampshire in 1880 and went on to attend Massachusetts Agricultural College in 1900 where he became a student of Frank Waugh. After graduating he worked various landscaping jobs and spent some time teaching before leaving for Pennsylvania State College to start a department of landscape gardening and floriculture in the college of agriculture. In 1913 he accepted the deanship at the University of California and set out to a similar department of landscape architecture with the help of Thomas F. Hunt. In this interview, Gregg discusses his childhood in New England, education at Massachusetts Agricultural College, employment after graduating, first years at UC Berkeley, Dean Hunt, development of curriculum, campus and civic work, professorship, and the relationship of landscape design to architecture in the early days of the profession. This interview is part of a group of interviews documenting regional cultural history.
