Mary McLean Olney was the daughter of John Knox McLean, the pastor of the First Congregational Church in Oakland from 1872 to 1895 and one of the most prominent influences in the religious communities of Oakland and Berkeley. Born in 1873, Olney grew up in Oakland and attended the University of California, Berkeley from 1891 to 1895. In 1899, she married San Francisco attorney Warren Olney, Jr., who was elected mayor of Oakland in 1903. In this interview, Olney discusses her family background, Bay Area life in the late nineteenth century, and her experiences as a student at UC Berkeley.
